Many older teens and adults aren’t too keen on the idea of getting orthodontic treatment because they don’t want to show off a mouthful of metal brackets and wires. Fortunately, Invisalign is available to help patients achieve an aligned smile without taking away from their appearance in the meantime. However, it’s important that you are well-informed before beginning treatment. Here are four things you should know about Invisalign.

You May Need Attachments

Your Invisalign treatment may include attachments. These are enamel-colored ridges that stick to your teeth like braces would. They are there to help the Invisalign aligners click into place so the teeth can move more effectively. However, even when you aren’t wearing your aligners, the bumps are very difficult to detect.

Invisalign Requires a 22 Hour Wear Time

When you have Invisalign, it’s important that you wear your trays for at least 22 hours each day. You should wear them pretty much all the time, except when you are eating, drinking, or cleaning your teeth. If you aren’t wearing your aligners enough, your teeth won’t move as effectively, and your treatment could be prolonged.

You Will Be Brushing Your Teeth Frequently

If you follow an excellent oral hygiene routine, you are used to brushing your teeth twice and flossing once daily. However, with Invisalign, you will need to clean your teeth more frequently. Every time you take your aligners out to eat or drink, you will need to thoroughly brush and floss before putting them back in.

Invisalign Attachments and Trays Can Stain

If you enjoy drinking coffee in the morning or a glass or red wine at night, you could end up with staining if you aren’t careful. Remember to always take out your aligners before enjoying any of these beverages. Since Invisalign attachments stain easily, you should rinse your mouth and brush after finishing your drink. You may want to consider using a straw to reduce the amount of contact that the liquid has with your teeth.

Invisalign is an excellent option for correcting misalignment. Just keep the things above in mind. This way, you will be prepared to begin your treatment!
